About Dance Movement Therapy
Dance movement therapy is a form of movement psychotherapy. Dance movement therapists combine the elements of dance, movement systems, creative processes, psychological and scientific theories, to support holistic growth and wellbeing of individuals, groups and communities. Dance therapy can be another "way in" allowing other means by which to communicate, express. connect and heal.
How we move is an expression of who we are, how we present ourselves to the world and relate to those within it. Movement is a means of communication and "being in the world". Non-verbal movement expression is another therapeutic dimension and can clarify or explore situations in different ways to verbal interventions. Dance therapy can be another "way in"allowing other means by which to communicate, express, connect and heal.
Dance therapy does not require the ability to ‘dance ‘in the traditional sense. Rather it uses movement as the therapeutic tool. Art making, storytelling, drawing, poetry and talking can all be part of the therapeutic creative process within a dance therapy session.
What can Dance Movement Therapy help with?
Our dance movement therapists all have extensive post-graduate training and are registered through our professional bodies DTAA and ANZACATA. Dance therapy works with individuals, groups and whānau across the age span. It is essentially about the “dance of relating” to self, to others, to the larger world.
